How to measure a home project
Better measurements produce better planning estimates and more comparable contractor quotes.
Start with a sketch
Draw the project as simple rectangles and label every dimension. Measure each section twice. For irregular areas, divide the shape into smaller rectangles or triangles and add their areas.
Area projects
Multiply length by width for each rectangular section. Flooring and painting measurements should identify closets, openings, ceilings and transitions separately rather than relying on one whole-house number.
Linear projects
Fences are measured along the actual fence line. Mark corners, ends and every gate because they affect posts and hardware even when total length stays unchanged.
Record site conditions
- Photograph access routes, slopes and obstacles.
- Note demolition and disposal requirements.
- Identify working height and equipment restrictions.
- Never assume property lines or underground utilities from visual landmarks.
Choose waste deliberately
Simple layouts may need less waste than diagonal, patterned or irregular work. Waste is an ordering allowance, not a target for material left over.
