What this estimate includes

The calculator separates common material, professional labor, disposal, permit allowance and contingency costs. It also accounts for the project conditions selected above. Sales tax, engineering, hidden damage and unusual access may require additional allowances.

How to use your result

  1. Confirm measurements at the project site.
  2. Compare at least two material choices.
  3. Print the report and request three local written quotes.
  4. Ask each contractor to identify exclusions, permit responsibility and cleanup.

Frequently asked questions

What drywall finish level do I need?

Utility spaces may accept a lower finish, while typical painted interiors commonly use Level 4. Strong side lighting, glossy paint or critical surfaces may justify Level 5.

How many drywall sheets are required?

Divide gross surface area by the panel coverage, then adjust for layout, openings and waste. Panel orientation and available lengths affect seams and labor, so sheet count alone does not determine installed cost.

Does demolition cost extra?

Usually. Demolition adds protection, dust control, fastener removal, hauling and disposal, and may expose insulation, wiring or water damage requiring separate work.

Finish level changes labor

Hanging panels is only one stage. Taping, repeated compound coats, sanding, corner bead and surface inspection drive finishing labor. Strong side lighting may justify a Level 5 finish.

Worked example

A standard 4-by-8 sheet covers 32 square feet before cuts. Wall openings reduce gross area but do not eliminate all waste because offcuts may not fit elsewhere.

Common planning mistakes

  • Ignoring ceiling lifts and high-wall staging.
  • Using standard board in wet or fire-rated assemblies.
  • Assuming painting is included.
