How to compare contractor quotes
The lowest total is not necessarily the lowest complete price.
Normalize the scope
Place each quote into the same categories: preparation, materials, labor, permits, disposal, protection, cleanup and warranty. A missing category is not automatically included.
Check allowances and exclusions
- Confirm exact products, grades, quantities and model numbers.
- Identify unit prices for concealed repairs.
- Ask who obtains permits and schedules inspections.
- Compare payment schedules and change-order procedures.
- Verify licensing and insurance where applicable.
